Just Shana: NY Avenue Beach Bar

Upon my return from NY and the prospective job I went up for not panning out I wasnt in the best mood.  "The sig" picked up on it and so when he picked me up from Union Station he suggested we visit the brand new NY Avenue Beach Bar.  It was about 10:30p on Sunday and the bar was open until midnight so we went for it.

I did an impromptu interview with one of the managers and found out that the idea for this concept had been in the mind of another NY Avenue business owner for quite some time but never really put into production.  Upon meeting and getting to know the owners of the Beach Bar it began to really take shape.  Around October/November of 2011 the wheels were set in motion to make it a reality.

The great thing is it has the support of other business owners of very popular and successful spots in the DC area who have banded together to assist in the success of the new venture but I am certain they wont need much assistance as I see it taking off in a big way.

The sand is bought in from Ocean City, the food truck, Sundevich has amazing food at even better prices and the owner of the truck has huge personality to boot.  The drinks are potent and tasty and the price point is doable.  We had top shelf margaritas for $9.  There are three bars and one even has a frozen drink maker  - sand, sun and slushies?  yes please!  There is a fancy port a potty, friendly staff, great sounds provided by a DJ and beach appropriate games.

The owners are open to suggestions and have even recently implemented a movie night so I suggest you run, dont walk to the NY Avenue Beach Bar.  I will meet you there.  Swimsuits optional.  :)

I Wanna Be an MUA - mini updates

As I began this journey I didn't know what to expect or what direction I wanted to take. Makeup Artistry can manifest itself in so many ways - film, print, runway, FX, etc. I have actually had an opportunity to participate in almost every medium thus far and for that I am so so very thankful. I just wanted to post this as an encouragement to those embarking on a similar journey, or you know what, ANY journey. Don't let anything deter you from what you dream of accomplishing. I have encountered so much hate and not even so much the blatant kind, its the sneaky, fake encouraging but really not happy for you in real life variety and I admit I let it get to me in the beginning but as of late, with things really picking up that I realize I must be doing something right so I let it roll of my back. Be encouraged, steadfast and determined, even when it seems like the road is a bit rocky, even if you have to go another route, continue on your journey no matter what.

With that said on to the news!

I did a shoot for a book cover! I don't know the name of the book just yet but it is of the erotica variety. Whenever I go on a gig I take my camera in hopes of getting some on set shots and I always forget or get caught up working that I don't have time to do snapshots. In any event the photographer did send me some preliminary shots that I wanted to share. Due to the nature of the book I will only share one that is a little more appropriate for those viewing while at work:

As you can see it called for a dramatic eye and bold lip. As soon as I receive more info on the book I will let you all know.

I did a wedding! When I first started I was a bit apprehensive but I lucked out with this bride and her family. They were so warm and pleasant that I really enjoyed myself. I don't have the photos yet but stay tuned...

Next up...Baltimore Fashion Week!!! I had my audition last week and I was so nervous I made myself sick...no like for real. I ended up getting stuck in traffic, getting lost along the way, but once I got in the studio and set up I just remained focused and the rest is history! I will be sure to keep you updated on that as well as other things coming up.

I'm doing another film! I had a shoot this past weekend where I had to do a 3 month old bullet wound (again with the no pics Shana!!! sheesh), we should wrap production by the end of August.

That's about it for now (that's enough right?), thanks for stopping by!

The Truth About Life...

I tried to jump in head first to the world of blogging and the truth is...sometimes life throws you a curveball and you have to maneuver around it.

I have a job, its not in the beauty or fashion industry, but I enjoy coming to work and I enjoy my co-workers. Currently we are facing layoffs, so my job security is anything but secure at this time. Even if I come out of this unscathed, position still intact, it doesnt negate the fact that others will indeed be affected and that, for me, is a tough pill to swallow.

You see, I have never had to go through this before. I have never been fired (I take that back, I worked at Lerner's - yeah before they were NY & Co. back when Landover Mall was open and was doing well there, transferred to the mall near U.M.E.S. during my freshman year of college and was like ok why the hell am I working? College should be fun! So I kinda quit/kinda got fired from there) any time I left a position it was of my own free will. To have that power stripped away from you is quite frightening to say the least.

"The Sig" says we will be ok, and to an extent I know that, but I cant shake the feeling of impending dread, you know? I cant fathom not being able to do what I want to do, go where I wanna go, etc. because we cant afford it. We are far from rich, but we are in a comfortable place and I like that. *sigh*

I share all of this to say that I love my blog. Its my own little piece of cyberspace and I take great pride in it. I have lots of ideas that I want to implement and I have met great people because of it. I apologize for the lack of posts this week but I barely even have an appetite let alone the frame of mind to share my thoughts on beauty products and the like...

I leave you with this - as Valentine's Day approaches, a "holiday" that I dont fret over like others since I feel that the love you have for someone should be shown any day, every day, I reflect on the love that I have around me. The love of my crazy azz friends, the love of my family, the love that "the sig" and I share and the love of T&T kid and T&T baby, that unconditional love, cause I know that no matter what happens here at work, that love will be there regardless. There is beauty in that, and I hope you all have tried it for yourselves and know it to be the truth.
